As onlookers watched the Wem Town Hall burn, while firefighters worked to put the blaze out, a photograph taken by Tony O'Rahilly captures a truly shocking image. The photograph, taken on November 19, 1995 appears to show a young girl looking out from the building at the fire escape. Niether O'Rahilly, the firefighters or any of the onlookers remembers seeing a young girl in the fire.
Some claim the image is that of "Jane Churm", a young girl that was accused of accidentally starting a fire in the hall in 1677.
The photograph and negative have been inspected by photograph experts (Dr. Vernon Harrison, former President of the Royal Photographic Society) and suggest that the photograph and negative have not been tampered with in any way. It is Dr. Harrison's opinion that the photograph does not show a spontaneous apparition. He believes that the suggestion of a figure may be caused by a freak combination of effects resulting from the fire and it’s impact on the fabric of the building, particularly as, when the photograph is magnified, part of the ‘head’ of the figure appears to be in front of the fire escape railings.
