Beyond Investigation decided to take the private, late night tour of the Whaley House one Saturday evening. The tour guides were VERY informative and more than willing to help with any questions.
I arrived early, expecting another BIM Team member to be there to help, but as it turned out he was unable to attend. I took video and still shots of the front of the house and was soon greeted by two very nice tour guides. With just two hours to investigate this house, I moved far faster than any fat man should. I started by taking photographs of the downstairs with the digital, Polaroid and the 35mm film cameras.
While in the only downstairs bedroom in the house, I did hear some strange crackling sounds. I stayed in this room for a short time until the noises stopped (yes, I did bring a digital audio recorder with me). Unable to determine the cause or location of the sounds, after they ended I moved on to the rest of the downstairs.
The courtroom (yes, Thomas Whaley built a courtroom but it wasn't originally connected to the house) had two poster board displays, each with several blown up pictures taken by an ex-tour guide. Some of these pictures were amazing to say the least. Evidently, this ex-tour guide would sit in one of the most active rooms and talk to the ghosts. After several weeks, he began to see strange shapes in some of his pictures. I did take pictures of the courtroom as well as some audio.
I moved into what was the kitchen, this room had a different feel to it than the rest of the downstairs. I took pictures with all three still cameras and did manage to capture an “orb”. Now, what that “orb” is, is anyone’s guess. It very well could be just be a speck of dust caught at the right time.
The upstairs was a whole different ball of wax. The theater (yes, Thomas Whaley made the front upstairs area a stage theater) was very hot like the rest of the upstairs (air conditioning was never installed) so this fat guy was sweating like a pig. I was able to capture another “orb” while in the theater and according to my tour guide, Thomas has been known to sit and watch the Christmas production from a chair that is backstage.
Thomas and Anna’s bedroom had some very cold spots in it, one of which was a chair that I decided to sit in while it was cold. The cold feeling while in the chair was actually a refreshing break from the 80 degree heat of the rest of the room. It was in this room that all of my batteries, in all of the equipment I was carrying failed. I had to run downstairs and change out the batteries and even the Polaroid camera film pack (which contains the battery) had to be changed even though it still had 8 pictures left.
The baby’s room is known to have a lot of activity and some of the pictures taken by the ex-tour guide were in the baby’s room.
The back bedroom upstairs is where I encountered the weirdest readings and feelings. As I stepped through the doorway, I had an immediate feeling of pressure on my chest. I wish I could explain the feeling better, but it felt as though someone was compressing my chest which made it a bit difficult to take a deep breath. The thermometer would not give any reading while the probe was inside the room. Once I moved the probe outside of the room, it worked perfectly. Upon stepping out of that room as I was finished, I was struck in the back of the head. It felt the way an open handed smack would feel. Maybe it was someone telling me "Ok, you're done, get the hell out of my room now fatty."
Pictures, audio and video of this investigation can be found on the included CD with this quarters’ magazine issue.
