For those readers that are not familiar with Southern California, “The 909” is an area code that covers a wide stretch of desert land in Southern California. The land was settled in the early 1800’s and many of the original buildings still stand today. Some of these buildings have their own legends of hauntings and ghosts and we have begun to research and investigate some of the more notable legends.

For those readers than live outside of Southern California, references to “The 909” do not have much meaning. Please allow me to explain: The 909 is not a secret government site a la Area 51, or some Mecca of the Supernatural. It simply consists of two of the larger areas of Southern California, Riverside County and San Bernardino County, which share the area code 909(Recently the area code has split to 951 in most of Riverside county, but the 909 moniker remains).
Thanks to the snobbery of the Orange and Los Angeles county elite, fueled by morning radio DJs and television shows like Fox’s “The OC”, the 909 became synonymous with rednecks and meth labs. The 909 is where you go to live when you aren’t allowed in Tennessee anymore (We all know that’s actually Bakersfield, but that’s a topic for another time).

In reality, the 909 is an area rich in California history, with settlements dating back to the early 1800’s. As with any area of historic nature, there are bound to be lots of ghost stories, and this is no exception. I have been flooded with stories of the supernatural, and have picked a few to investigate.  As a side note, I am a resident of the 909, relocating from Orange County myself, two years ago. I have all of my teeth, and am not now, nor have I ever been, married to any relative.

Here's a couple side-by-side after salt&pepper filter.

Very true, the 909 is scary to even drive through . Seriously though one of my aunt and uncles along with their 5 children moved into a very old house in the 80's which I believe it was said to have been built in the late 1890's in Riverside. I never believed all the "ghost" stories they would tell until my family and I stayed the night a couple times. We got to hear the sound of footsteps coming from the attic that scared the living sh** out of my family and yet my cousins were so used to it that they took it as an everyday joke. The thing that really freaked me out though was that there was a large restroom that was adjacent to my cousin's room (where I got to sleep in) where at one night while everyone was asleep and I was trying to fall asleep I see the light come on and someone starts knocking on the door like if they were trying to get out. I then wake my cousin and he (also half freaked) goes up to the door and knocks back to see if there's a response before he opens the door, whoever was back there knocks back and freaks both of us out. We then run back to the beds and hide under the covers until we don't hear anything else. We turn on all the lights that we can in the bedroom, and my cousin then goes to the restroom who sees nobody in there like usual and turns the light off, and off to bed we go. The next morning we tell our parents what happened and with me being 8 and my cousin 12 they would normally take it as a joke, but after being in that house every story seemed possible. My aunt, uncle and cousins moved out of that house in the early 90's sometime and I believe that house still remains.

Hello Duke and a great bit of information... At 8yrs old, I'm sure I would have gone screaming to my parents, so you have me beat. Were there any reports of anyone seeing a ghost/figure in the house? and do you remember the address?

Hi Pat! Sorry I took so long to respond, but from what I remember there were just wierd shadows and sensations of some other beings when people were alone in the house or late at night. The only actual sight that I remember of was one of my cousins (she had to have been about 12 or 13) describing a vision of young boy approx. 5 years old wearing all white clothes with pale white skin in their back yard on a heavy rainy day that apparently ran accross the yard and into an old fishing boat that my uncle (her father) owned. The story sounds fishy, but she did tell my uncle and the next day he checks inside the boat and finds the couch that was in there drenched with water and there was no way water could have gotten in there, the rest of the inside of the boat was bone dry.

And sorry Pat, but the exact location of the house I don't remember. I would have to ask around within my family. All I remember is that all the houses in the area were very old and there was a power plant or something right next door that always made a buzzing noise 24/7 which the whole block was apparently used to.

Being only 8, I guess it would be a bit hard to remember the details Duke. I'm sure the scary parts you experienced are vivid memories.

Please feel free to post, ask questions, etc.... and thank you for your interest in BIM....
